Animal Forensic Testing
We also offer a range of animal forensic DNA testing services. We are Australia's only NATA (National Association of Testing Authorities) accredited laboratory for forensic canine DNA analysis in criminal or forensic investigations.
Animal DNA testing can be of critical importance in a forensic case, as humans often cohabitate or interact with animals. Transfer of DNA from hair, saliva, blood, or faeces can occur during a crime, from an animal to a suspect, crime scene or victim. In a forensic case animals can be the victim, the perpetrator or a witness to a crime.
Animal Forensic Testing applications can include:
Identification of an animal involved in an attack on a person or other animal
Animal cruelty cases
Theft of an animal
Linking a suspect with a crime scene or victim though animal DNA
Species identification of a sample of unknown biological material e.g. unknown meat sample

Case Study
In ownership disputes, animal DNA testing has been able to match stolen puppies to their parents and stolen sheep to the rightful breeders sire and dams.
Canine DNA testing has been used in animal cruelty cases. In one case, a dog was severely bashed using a metal rod. Blood staining and canine DNA evidence recovered from the weapon was used to help convict the accused in a court of law.
